These are the two faces who invested heavily to help Mr. Trump win in the electoral states.
Elon Musk has spent more than three-quarters of his fortune to help Donald Trump win the election. If he fails, Elon Musk and Donald Trump will have nothing left.
Billionaire Elon Musk has spent lavishly to support Donald Trump in this year’s White House race, and all of that support is aimed at one important battleground state.
Pennsylvania: Musk’s campaign focus
Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has built a powerful campaign machine to support Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, including a multibillion-dollar campaign, leveraging the power of social media, and offering $1 million to voters in battleground states.
Despite its wide-ranging scope, the campaign is clearly focused on Pennsylvania, a battleground state with 19 electoral votes.
In recent weeks, Musk has held community meetings across Pennsylvania, emphasizing the state’s potential role in the election outcome.
Between appearances, he has posted updates on early voter turnout and shared controversial election information on his social media platform X.
“The reason I’m here in person is because Pennsylvania is so important to the future of the world,” the billionaire told a crowd last month in Folsom, a small town outside Philadelphia with a population of about 8,500.
Experts skeptical
However, campaign finance and election politics experts who spoke to ABC News said it was unclear whether Musk’s lavish and costly campaign would actually influence the outcome of the race in the crucial state.
Musk is entering the race with just months to go until Election Day (Nov. 5) and targeting a state already flooded with political ads and voter turnout efforts, experts said. While the billionaire’s spending is huge, the resources supporting Vice President Kamala Harris are no less impressive, experts added.
However, they said Musk’s sudden spending and popularity among some young male voters could make a small difference in Trump’s favor, which could be decisive in a closely contested state like Pennsylvania. A poll by ABC News’ Project 538 in Pennsylvania shows the race is still very tight in the state, with Trump leading by just 0.1 percentage points.
Michael Kang, a law professor at Northwestern University, said Musk’s efforts would not have a major impact, but could still decide the outcome given the thin margin in Pennsylvania.
“Overall, I don’t think Musk’s campaign has a big impact,” Kang told ABC News. “But this time, it could really decide the outcome because it’s a very tight race in the only state that could swing the election.”
Musk often posts pro-Trump messages on the social media platform X, where he has more than 202 million followers. He occasionally appears on stage at Trump rallies to urge people to vote for Trump. He also donated nearly $75 million to Trump in the three months through September, according to government records.
Musk also recently launched a program to give $1 million a day to registered voters in battleground states. Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner later sued Musk, alleging he was running an illegal lottery.
On November 4, a Pennsylvania judge rejected a request from the Philadelphia district attorney to block Musk’s $1 million-a-day voter rewards program.
Experts told ABC News they were skeptical about the effectiveness of the rewards program, saying Musk would likely only reach people who had already pledged their support and planned to vote for Trump.
“This is a tight state. You can try anything and hope it works. But I haven’t found Musk’s approach compelling,” said Ray La Raja, a political science professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
However, the controversial rewards program and the buzz generated by his campaign trips across the state could help encourage Musk’s fans to vote, experts said. Rather than attracting new Trump supporters, Musk could help boost voter turnout, especially among young men who are hard to get to the polls.
